CASE STUDY
SOUTH32 → GROOTE EYLANDT
South32 engaged our team to carry out structural integrity inspections across its Groote Eylandt operations, assessing the condition of site structures to support safe, reliable performance. With over 500 hours logged on site, the inspections covered a broad range of structures, identifying defects, deterioration mechanisms, and any issues that could affect safety, serviceability or operational performance across the mine site.
Ageing site infrastructure across a large, active mine site needed to be assessed for defects, deterioration and structural concerns without disrupting operations. A key challenge was gaining safe access to some structures while complying with strict site safety requirements and operational constraints, meaning inspection activities had to be carefully planned around site access permits, existing work schedules and limited inspection windows.
We began by reviewing site requirements, inspection procedures and the relevant standards applicable to the structures under assessment, then carried out detailed onsite inspections to assess condition and identify defects. Close coordination with site personnel allowed us to plan inspection activities around access constraints and safety requirements, ensuring every structure could be properly assessed without compromising site safety or operational continuity.
The inspection program was completed within the anticipated timeframe, giving South32’s maintenance and operations teams a clear picture, based on the evidence gathered, of asset condition across the site. The quality of the work led to further opportunities with the client, reflecting confidence in our approach and delivery. Maintenance teams and site operations now have the information needed to prioritise remedial action and maintain safe, reliable performance across the assessed structures.
