JDR MINING
JDR Mining approached our team to design a shed to protect process equipment and store chemicals used in reprocessing tailings to extract gold at its Tick Hill operation, next to an existing tailings dam. The client wanted a highly modular structure that could be quickly deconstructed and relocated or sold once the project was complete, and suggested incorporating shipping containers for their durability, versatility and cost.
Rather than a conventional portal framed column, braced and sheeting shed, the brief called for a modular building using stacked shipping containers that could still transfer roof, crane, and wall loads down through the structure like a standard portal frame. The challenge was keeping the whole building modular, including the roof and allowance for gantry cranes, while staying within normal building design parameters and the client’s tight budget and construction timeline.
Our engineer worked out how to stack shipping containers, so they behaved structurally like a conventional portal frame, transferring loads from a prefabricated roof down through the container walls into the pre-cast footings. Build and construction costs stayed front of mind throughout design without compromising the safety or integrity of the building, and we kept the client closely informed of every design decision along the way.
The result was a shed built to suit the brief, combining reused shipping containers with prefabricated roof panels and footings to give JDR Mining a flexible, scalable structure that can be decommissioned and rebuilt at a new site with minimal lead time. The project achieved its intended purpose while saving the client cost and lead time compared to a conventional build and has led to ongoing work with JDR Mining on the back of it.
